St. George's Day Service & Parade 2010

District Commissioner

Ray Alderman

President

Terry Slocombe

Our St. George's Day parade was held in the world heritage village of Saltaire. The service was held in the United Reformed Church where Sir Titus Salt is laid to rest in the mausoleum. The minister, Paul Breeze, officiated. The host group, 5th Shipley, played a major part in the service.

This was Ray Alderman's last St. George's Day as district commissioner. He hands over the reins to Carolyn Driver at the AGM in May. Ray was district commissioner of Bingley until the merge with Shipley & Baildon in 2004. He then became district commissioner of the newly formed Aire Valley Scout District. Ray ends his tenure knowing that member numbers of Aire Valley have risen for the last 3 years. We are now the third largest district in West Yorkshire.

The 3rd Bingley Sea scouts won the smartest on parade certificate. Cub scout leader Helen Alderman was presented with the Silver Acorn for exceptional service to scouting. The 5th Shipley received the Lead Group certificate. The Wood Badge was awarded to Denene Capper (5th Shipley) on completion of her leader training.

As the service ended, and the flags were being paraded out of the church, the bearers were met with a sudden & heavy downpour. We had hoped this would stop but it kept on raining heavily. A decision was taken to abandon the march through Saltaire village. The youngsters were entertained by Andrew Manley & Neil Griffin with campfire songs. Below are a selection of photos taken prior to the rain.
