Seal spotting & horse riding camp - 1st Shipley (Windhill)

On the Saturday 14th January, 14 Scouts, Explorers and Leaders set out for North cotes, Lincolnshire. After a 2 hour journey (with a quick stop at Tescos) we arrived at the farm where we would be pitching camp, the camp went up quickly with tents going up left ,right and centre and after a tutorial on how to use the chemical toilets we journeyed to the seal spotting beach. Here we saw 3 seal pups and took plenty of photos, followed by a walk to RAF Donna Nook to look around the base there. We arrived back at the campsite for a tea of stew and topped off the evening of charades, bop –it extreme and who’s in the bag whilst sat round the (very) warm campfire.

Then everybody settled down for a sleep in -6 °C conditions, thankfully no one turned into an ice cube overnight and a welcome breakfast of bacon sandwiches and warm drinks to prepare us for a day of horse riding and mucking out the stables. It was a race against time to strike if we wanted our treat on the way back home, we managed it just and were rewarded with an ice-cream at a local ice-cream parlour.

On the whole the weekend was fun and exciting and many of us learnt how to care for horses and experienced new activities. Well done everyone!

District Commissioner's Christmas message

It has been another busy year in Scouting and I have enjoyed all the Beaver, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer activities I have been on.

When I became District Commissioner I said I wanted to ‘make a difference’ and I wanted everyone else to feel they also made a difference.  Please spend a few minutes reflecting on all the young people’s lives you have made a difference to during the year.

I would like to thank you for all the time and effort you put into Scouting.  As Christmas approaches hopefully you will have less Scouting to do and can look forward to Christmas and the New Year with your family and friends.  So have a good relaxing break over the Christmas period.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year.

Carolyn Driver

Cub Christingle December 2011
Around 70 Cub Scouts from the district met at St Peter's Church, to take part in a wonderful Christingle Service.  The Cubs arrived and spent time making thier Christingles before being welcomed and singing The Calypso Carol.
Next Jennifer Griffin read the story behind the Christingle before the Cubs thought about their 'hopes for Christmas'.  Volunteers helped being an acrostic of the words HAPPY CHRISTMAS before singing the carol Away in a Manger as the Christingle candles were lit.
Prayers were said by candle light before the service closed. Thank you to everyone who took part.
